After launch
Visitors to your website
See how many people visit your website and which pages they look at.
Open Analytics in the left-hand menu to see who's visiting your live website. On a phone, it's under More.
Over time shows your visitors for a period, such as the last 30 days. Right now shows who's on your website at the moment.
Visitors and page views
- Visitors are different people. Each person counts once in the period you're looking at, however often they come back.
- Page views count every page that's opened. Someone who opens your Services page 3 times is 1 visitor and 3 page views.
Choose Visitors or Page views to switch what the chart shows. Point at a bar, or tap it on a phone or tablet, to see that day's numbers.
Choosing a period
You'll see the Last 30 days to start with. Choose the period button above the numbers to change it:
| Period | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Today | Today so far, hour by hour |
| This week | Since Monday |
| This month | Since the 1st of the month |
| Last 30 days | The last 30 days, including today |
| Last 90 days | Roughly the last three months |
| Custom dates… | Choose From and To dates, up to a year apart |
Days and hours are in UK time.
Views per page
Pages lists your pages with the most viewed first, showing visitors and views for each. The shaded bar behind each row shows how it compares with your most viewed page.
A page you've since deleted keeps its numbers and shows its old address, marked No longer on your website.
Right now
Choose Right now at the top of Analytics to see everyone who opened a page on your website in the last 5 minutes.
- Visitors is how many people that is. Each person counts once.
- Page views counts every page they opened in those 5 minutes.
- Pages they're on shows where each person is now: the last page they opened. When someone moves from your Home page to Services, they move to Services here too.
It updates by itself every few seconds while you have it open. Someone who stays on one page for more than 5 minutes without opening another drops out of the count, so it's a good guide rather than an exact headcount.
When counting starts
Counting starts once your website is live (Publishing your website). Visits from the editor and from share links (Sharing a preview) aren't counted, so your own editing doesn't add to the numbers. Your own visits to your live website do count.
If your website went live before visitor numbers were added, publish it once more to start counting. Analytics reminds you if it's needed.
Someone using a private browsing window, or who clears their cookies, is counted as a new visitor when they come back.
Privacy
To tell a returning visitor from a new one, your website keeps a small cookie holding a random ID. It doesn't collect names, email addresses or IP addresses.
You may want to mention this cookie in your website's privacy information.
